The beginning – L’inizio

“Once upon a time” seemed like the perfect start of this post and our story might very well turn out to be a fairy tale come true. For those of you who might not know it, we had been contemplating a lifestyle change for quite a long time. Fed up with the crowded dirty streets, terrible traffic, being dependent on insufficient public services and eating vegetables that taste like water, we had been dreaming of a house of our own in the middle of nature, being almost auto-sufficient (at least trying to be), growing our own food and reconnecting with “the old ways”. Little did we know that it would take us quite a few years and a whole other country to finally find a place that would fit almost all of our requirements, but we did it!

“C’era una volta” sembrava l’inizio perfetto di questo post e anche la nostra storia potrebbe rivelarsi una fiaba che si avvera. Per quelli di voi che non lo sanno – è da tanto tempo che stavamo contemplando il cambiamento dello stile di vita. Stufi delle strade affollate e sporche, del traffico terribile, stanchi di essere dipendenti dai servizi pubblici inefficienti e di mangiare verdura che sa di acqua, abbiamo sognato una casa tutta nostra in mezzo della natura, essendo quasi autosufficienti (o almeno cercando di esserlo), coltivando il nostro cibo e ritrovando “i modi antichi”. Non avremmo mai pensato che ci sarebbero serviti diversi anni e un’altro paese per trovare finalmente il posto adatto a quasi tutte le nostre esigenze, però ce l’abbiamo fatta!

So once upon a time, it was a lovely autumn day in Latvia when we became the owners of our new home and our journey could begin.

Quindi – c’era una volta un bel giorno autunnale in Lettonia quando siamo diventati i proprietari della nostra nuova casa e il nostro viaggio poteva iniziare!

It has been a few months already, we took some time to adjust to the new surroundings and especially to the Latvian winter which has been quite snowy this year even if not particularly cold, spending days shovelling the snow and burning wood to get some heat.

Sono già passati un paio di mesi, abbiamo preso un po’ di tempo per adattarci al nuovo ambiente ed in particolare all’inverno lettone che è stato molto nevoso quest’anno anche se non particolarmente freddo, passando le giornate spalando la neve e riscaldandoci con le stufe a legna.

We are anxiously waiting for the spring to come to start different projects outside and we can’t wait to share them with you!
