Let’s be honest – this winter sucks!! I mean it’s nice not to have your pipes freeze and all the surrounding fauna trying to get into your house to look for shelter from cold, but, man, it would be so nice to have some fluffy snow!!! I guess we were spoiled last year when our forest turned into a winter wonderland…
Parliamoci chiaro – quest’inverno fa schifo! Vero, è bello evitare le situazioni dove i tubi si spaccano e tutto il bosco viene in casa per ripararsi dal gelo, però, cavolo, un pò di neve non nuocerebbe. Forse siamo stati viziati l’anno scorso quando il bosco si era trasformato nel paese delle meraviglie.
We spent the holiday season in Genoa, Italy and it was mostly 15′-18′ degrees outside and it really is hard to have a cosy Christmas feeling when you are walking around in short sleeves and getting sun-tanned. So we were looking forward to going back north.
Abbiamo passato la stagione delle feste a Genova, Italia, dove ogni giorno faceva 15′-18′ gradi e siamo tutti d’accordo che è molto difficile provare le sensazioni natalizie quando puoi girare fuori in maniche corte ed abbronzarti. Quindi eravamo contenti di tornare al nord.
No winter here either. With temperatures much higher than your usual January, the spring flowers are getting confused and starting to wake up.
Ma niente inverno pure qua. Con le temperature molto più alte del solito, i fiorellini cominciano a svegliarsi tutti confusi.
And our lawn is still so luscious and green that all the forest beasts are coming for a breakfast snack.
Il nostro prato è sempre verde e così invitante che tutte le bestie del bosco vengono per fare la colazione.
Of course, a warmer winter means we need to burn less wood to keep the house warm and we can start to think about getting new firewood for the next season. This is a task where we usually get some help from our beaver friends when they have some time off from building their dams. And most recently – also from the people who came to clean the electric lines from potential harm, like loose branches and leaning trees.
Ovviamente, l’inverno più temperato vuol dire che dobbiamo bruciare meno legna per riscaldare la casa e quindi possiamo iniziare a pensare a fare la legna per la stagione prossima. Questo è un lavoretto dove di solito veniamo aiutati dai nostri amici castori con cui spesso condividiamo lo stesso materiale. E più recentemente ci ha dato una mano anche la gente che è venuta a pulire le strade dei cavi elettrici dai potenziali danni, come per esempio, i rami pendenti e gli alberi pericolanti.
But it also gives us false hope that the sowing season is already upon us when it really isn’t which, of course, doesn’t keep me from sorting and playing with the seeds.
Però un gennaio caldo ci da anche la falsa speranza che la stagione di giardinaggio stia per inizare, anche se questo non è per niente vero, ma non mi trattiene certo dal giocare/sistemare/contare/comprare i semi nuovi.
Every now and then the clouds whip up some flakey goodness in a form of extremely wet snow and we start to get excited, but it just melts down in a couple of hours and we are back to square one. No winter in sight.
Ogni tanto il cielo si apre e comincia a spruzzare una specie di semifreddo frullato. Ed ogni volta ci agitiamo felici anche se sappiamo benissimo che fra un paio di ore non ci sarà più traccia dell’accaduto. Niente, si riparte da capo, nessun inverno in vista…
